National Maritime Museum – Amsterdam

The unique glass dome of the National Maritime Museum (Scheepvaartsmuseum) in Amsterdam draws its design inspiration from a maritime navigational chart. Octatube Services ensures the longevity of the dome by providing ongoing maintenance for its structural components.

Dome

The dome above the courtyard has created a distinctive area within the 17th-century building, exerting minimal impact on the historical monument. The glass structure spans 1156 square metres and consists of an intricate web of steel lines that create a compass-like pattern. The glass used is solar control, insulating, and in some areas, walkable. The solar coating on the glass contributes to a comfortable indoor climate.

Atrium maintenance

Even though Octatube did not design the dome, the stylish glass and steel construction aligns well with Octatube Services’ maintenance portfolio. Dome structures are familiar ground for us. We are responsible for maintaining the domes of both the AFAS dome in Leusden (NL). Additionally, we take pride in maintaining the striking atrium canopy of the Scheepvaartmuseum. During cleaining, we inspect all kit seams and address minor defects to prevent future leaks.
