JUUL – Rotterdam

For the new-build project JUUL in Rotterdam, Octatube Services is creating a remarkable new rooftop structure on a historic building: a lightweight steel construction, nine metres high, will crown the surviving church tower as the new sprie of the Julianakerk, which was destroyed by fire.

JUUL Rotterdam

In 2017 the Julianakerk was almost completely destroyed by fire. Only the church tower and a few walls remain standing. In the redevelopment plan by HA – HA Design & Development, architects Nima Morkoç and Matthijs van Mullingen have integrated these surviving remnants of the church into the new development of four unique family homes. The plan is being carried out by BIK bouw.

New steel spire

Octatube Services is constructing the new steel spire. A steel tube will rise nine metres above a steel frame, which is concealed behind the remains of the original spire. Eight tension rods stabilise the steel tube. Around it, a steel mesh will allow climbing plants to grow. The steel structure is being fully assembled in Octatube’s workshop and then hoisted onto the tower in one piece.
